PICCOLOR Newsletter Winter 2013/2014
At FIBUS, we have been following the development of the new camera/PC-interfaces closely.
However, CameraLink HS is still not usable, with not even one frame grabber on the market.
For CoaXPress, the market has actually evolved, with as many as 12 camera manufacturers and
4 frame grabber manufacturers (source System Vision Design). However, we didn't decide for
implementation of a special CoaXPress interface for picCOLOR because Frame Grabber hardware
and API design is still not good enough. Also cable length is a big problem, as with CXP you
can only have up to 20 or 30m at high speed. Glassfiber solutions for CXP will not be
available at all. Anyway, we are very close to adapting the Silicon Software CXP API for
picCOLOR. So if there is any demand, this should be discussed with the picCOLOR developer team.
Again new frame grabbers and camera interfaces have been adapted for picCOLOR. Here we have the
different PCO interfaces, as FireWire, USB2, and GigE. Also the older SensiCam interface has been
implemented. Even if the SensiCam is an older camera and is being replaced by newer PCO cameras,
it is widely used in the Scientific community because of its excellent image quality and its glass
fiber interface for very long distances.
Teledyne DALSA has developed a new CameraLink Full grabber family, the XTIUM grabber, that has an
extraordinary interesting upward path with newer interfaces like CXP or CameraLink HS to come in
the future. The Xtium CameraLink card is supposed to provide an extended cable length.
Some of the new functions implemented in the past year are:
New functions in the picCOLOR basic program:
- Real Time Flat Field Correction with Teledyne DALSA frame grabbers
- PCO SC API for the older SensiCam cameras has been implemented
- picCOLOR can now act as TCP/IP server or client
- Many other minor improvements of the basic functions are implemented
3D/Sequence extension module:
-
2D/3D Real Time Object Tracking Extension Module:
- Epipolar Geometry was implemented to automatically search and match markers in different views

- Multi-Camera 3D-Tracking using several computers
- Many other minor improvements of the Real Time Tracking module are implemented
